Choosing a domain name is vital for anyone building a new website. Your domain name will be the face of your brand, and if you want to increase the chances of your website succeeding. So you will take the time to find a branded and memorable domain name. And there are different groups with multiple domain names to choose from. Not every domain name will be appropriate for your website, which actually makes things easier. To be able to register a domain, you must have at least some basic knowledge of domains

What is a domain?

A domain name is the address of your website that people type into a browser's URL bar to visit your website. For example your website is a house, then your domain name will be its address. Every house has an address. Your domain name is equivalent to the name of the physical address where you live, but for the web. Your home address allows people or your GPS to find and navigate your home, while your domain tells web browsers where to go to view your website. Domain names are often synonymous with the name of your website and will be the face of your website. Imagine domains like Amazon.com, Google.com, Facebook.com.

There are many different types of domains available that you will find when you go to register a domain, outside of the standard ".com". Several different groups of domains are available Now that you better understand what domain names are and how they work, let's dive into the types of domain names available for you to register.

When most people think of a website, they usually think of the standard ".com." Although this is the most common extension, it is available. several different types of extensions. In fact, there are five different types of domains available to you. Some will not be available to you if you do not use a particular type of website, but we discuss this in detail below.

Top Level Domain - TLD

Top-level domains are at the top of the Internet domain name hierarchy. You will see that they are usually called TLDs. Thousands of different TLDs are available. In recent years, ICANN has opened a new registration and approval of TLDs, so that companies and individuals could set up and register unique TLDs. This has increased the number of available TLDs. There are over 1000 domains in this group, but the ones that are most often used everywhere are the domains: com, net, me, org, info, as among others, and the domains shown in the photo. These are just a small number of domains from this group, but they are certainly the most used worldwide.

Country Code Top Level Domain - ccTLD

We have the highest country code (ccTLD) domains on the list. As the name suggests, they are technically related to different countries. Each country has its own ccTLD, but you don't have to use it just because you live in a particular country. These domain extensions can be useful if you're building a website in a particular country and want to let your visitors know they've come to the right place. For example, U.S.-based websites may use the .us extension, while Japanese companies may use the .jp extension. In the second case, it is possible to use the domain of another country as part of compiling an interesting domain from a marketing point of view. On the example of the company Frame, which later in America used the domain www.fra.me to make the game that the complete domain has the name of the company. So even though it uses a domain in America that is valid for a domain connected to Montenegro, which is not necessarily the same as in the given example.

Sponsored Top Level Domain - sTLD

And we have generic top-level domains (gTLDs). This is more of a definition than the actual type of domain. As the description suggests, it is just a different variation of TLD. So, you can also technically classify this type of domain as a TLD. The generic aspect of this domain extension refers to the types of use cases for which those domains are intended. Let's look at an example. Military organizations can use the ".mil" extension, while educational institutions can use ".edu" and ".org" for nonprofits. Many gTLDs can be registered even if you do not qualify, but for some like " .mil "and" .edu "you must meet the requirements.

Other types of domains are not so popular, so we will not deal with them but with important criteria that should be followed when choosing a domain. Some of the key items to pay special attention to when choosing a domain are

- to be easy to remember A short name that is easy to remember will help people remember, convey and tell others about the existence of the site more easily. In many studies, this is mentioned as an important part of direct traffic on the site - easy to write. Example Fiver owners owned more because people typed the site name incorrectly, so they also bought a Fiver domain, which according to their statistics is the most typed after the actual name

- domain name to be as short as possible insiders say that it is best for the domain to be between five and 15 letters long. If what you have chosen does not fit into those frames or the domain is not free, then arrange it as you can, trying to "spend" as few letters as possible. But keep in mind that a short enough name is sometimes a "stronger" argument than a brand or good key words.

- avoid similarities with the competition Whether the competition is stronger than you or not, it doesn't suit you or them to confuse you. On the other hand, people sometimes "smooth" great domains before others, putting a "paw" on an entire niche - for example, pekar.rs, zdravlje.rs and the like.

- especially avoid branded names It's like dragging your hand into someone else's jar of honey. However, the worst thing is that someone most often mistyped the domain name and came to you. The probability that it will stay on your site is not higher than 1%

Keywords are important, but not crucial. It's good for a domain to contain a keyword, but that's not always feasible. Many suggest HEO (human eye optimization) as a very good alternative to SEO (search engine optimization). Domains are for people, not for machines, make sure the domain is easy, easy to remember, as short as possible, easy to type, without "heavy" characters. If you can put a keyword in there, great, if not, nothing to anyone.
